CompareMaine Cost Trends Over Time
The Maine Health Data Organization (MHDO) and the Maine Quality Forum (MQF) are required by law to promote the transparency of the cost and quality of health care services in the state of Maine. To fulfill the requirement, MHDO and MQF launched www.CompareMaine.org, the State’s healthcare transparency website, in the fall of 2015. CompareMaine reports the average cost of over 200 common healthcare procedures at over 150 different facilities across Maine, by each of the top 5 health insurance companies in the State, and displays several key ratings on the quality of care provided.
CompareMaine’s new interactive Trends Over Time report allows you to compare how average total costs have changed over time for hundreds of healthcare procedures at each facility across the state.
Cost Data Date Ranges
The cost data is updated bi-annually with data from MHDO’s All-Payer Claims Database (APCD), (with the exception of the CompareMaine 3.0 release, which updated quality data only).
|1.0||October 2015||1/1/2014 – 3/31/2015|
|2.0||June 2016||10/1/2014 – 9/30/2015|
|3.0||December 2016||10/1/2014 – 9/30/2015|

Note: Surgical procedure cost estimates have not been updated for CompareMaine 6.0, and their costs remain reflective of the July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017 time period due to a transition to a new episode grouping tool.
Percent of Cost Changes Between CompareMaine Releases
To facilitate cross-time comparisons, a color-coded table shows each procedure’s percentage change in cost between one CompareMaine data release and the next:
- Green – Decreased Costs
- Red – Increased Costs
- Black – No Change in Costs
